To write about anything <3

Fox News Channel launched on October 7,1996. It was created by Rupert Murdoch, and he hired Roger Ailes as its founding CEO. It was primarily built to appeal to a more conservative audience. Today, Fox News Media runs many different outlets, such as Fox Channel, Fox Business, Fox Weather, and many more; it would be a bit redundant to go through all. According to Fox News Media’s own website, Fox News Media reaches around to 200 million people a month (Fox News Media,2026). A social media presence is very important to businesses, especially for Fox News; the audience moves to where the most attention is. More than 5.41 billion people use social media worldwide(cite), averaging about 2 hours and 21 minutes a day. In the United States, YouTube and Facebook are the most used platforms, and about half of adults get news from social media platforms(Pews Research, 2025). Relying only on cable networks to reach viewers would limit and shut out attention to the business; therefore, social distribution is now a core part of the business.

Fox News is active on YouTube, Facebook, X, and TikTok. All follower counts are from October 2026. Its YouTube channel has 15.5 million subscribers, and its separate channel called Fox News Clips, launched in May 2025, has 862 thousand subscribers as of October 2026. Fox News Facebook has 37 million followers, Fox News Instagram has 12.3 million followers, Fox News X account has 29.4 million followers, and Fox News TikTok has 12.2 million followers. The network, from what I saw, doesn’t publish a single follower table, so I’ll be comparing engagement, which Fox reports monthly. In Q1 2026, the network reported 219 million Facebook interactions, 75 million on Instagram, 20 million on X, and 115.9 million on TikTok. However, it’s best to note that these numbers are from the company itself, so there may be some bias and an interest in promoting its own success.

YouTube seems to be its more effective platform. According to Fox, it had its best year ever in 2025, with 4.5 billion views, a 69% increase over 2024, and in Q2 2026 it had 1.4 billion views. This makes sense, since we’ve established YouTube is the most popular platform, so its higher view count tracks with that. So, therefore, Fox invests where its audience already spends time. The network’s own coverage even credits its decision to emphasize the platform. Facebook leads in interaction volume, which is an older-skewing platform with around 3 billion users worldwide. X has the fewest raw interactions, though it can still produce spikes.

TikTok seems likely to drive more growth and success, as interactions jumped to 47 million in July 2026, up 118% from a year earlier, which matters because 2026 Pew Research finds that 65% of 18-29-year-olds use TikTok versus 11% of adults 65+. This means that Fox News is deliberately pushing towards a younger audience than what cable can reach. As for maintenance, the volume of interactions and monthly video views implies constant daily posting across platforms. When writing this post, I looked at the Fox News YouTube channel to get a feel for how often they post and how many views they get per day. I counted 24 videos uploaded before a full 24 hours passed, and for the most part, each video got at least 100k views. So they’re clearly very present, and this is just YouTube; I’m sure they’re just as active on other social media sites.

Using the five components from our textbook, Fox does well in some aspects and less well in others. Choice is strong, as audiences can watch clips, full segments, live coverage, and short vertical videos on their preferred platform; they clearly have lots of choices. Curation is also strong since producers cut hours of television into more digestible clips and headlines. Creation is strong in volume, with platform-specific edits for each channel. Conversation is harder for me to judge. Interaction count includes comments, and there are a lot. However, it’s hard for me to tell whether the discussions are productive or whether the network actually replies frequently enough for it to count. Collaboration also looks limited to me, as I couldn’t find much beyond sharing and commenting from Fox’s audiences.

Overall, Fox News uses social media effectively as a distribution engine, but I do believe it’s less effective as a community-building resource. Its strengths include clear leadership on YouTube, rapid growth on TikTok, and a loyal, highly engaged core audience. Its weaknesses, however, include heavy reliance on engagement metrics, limited evidence of two-way conversations, and trust challenges beyond its core audience. Pew data cited by a Virginia Tech expert shows the network reaches only about 18 percent of the U.S. in an average month. It also has more opportunities to reach younger audiences on Instagram and TikTok and to convert social viewers to owned channels, such as its app. Possible threats include algorithm changes, platform regulation, competition from other channels, and legal and reputational risk.I recommend two actions. First, invest in community management: have moderators reply to comments, publish corrections prominently, and add “friction” such as labels or prompts before sharing sensitive stories, which MIT experts suggest slows the spread of false claims. Second, reduce dependence on borrowed platforms by funneling viewers into owned channels like newsletters and the Fox app, while using short-form video to build a younger audience. Fox has proven it can win attention. The next challenge is turning attention into trust and a direct relationship it controls.
